How did we get our start?
In 1850, William Dudley, a master English shoemaker, began crafting shoes out of his home in Newark, New Jersey. Thirty years later, James Johnston joined as a partner helping to create a line of durable, high fashion footwear. Style and superior craftsmanship was a winning combination. Eventually, Johnston partnered with William Murphy—and the Johnston & Murphy name quickly came to stand for the highest quality shoes in America.
